The Matagi of Akita Prefecture

BRIEF

Akita Prefecture wants to attract more visitors by providing authentic Japanese experiences that cannot be had anywhere else in Japan. Part of Akita Prefecture’s culture are the Matagi which are also known as the bear hunters of Akita. Travel experience operator Travel Design was in the process of creating bespoke nature and cultural experiences in Akita and asked us to make a piece to introduce the Matagi to the world.

SOLUTION

We created a cinematic film that introduces the life of the Matagi while also showing the beauty of Akita in winter. Our team spent three days with the Matagi in remote Japan as we trekked over mountains, gathered food, cooked our meals in the snow and experienced what it is like to live the life of the Matagi. The footage was edited into a short fast-paced piece to entice people to learn more about the Matagi and acts as a gate-way to our ‘Masters of Japan’ series that was created later in the year.

RESULTS

The video was well received and sparked the creation of our extended ‘Masters of Japan’ series. The content lives online and is being used in promotional tours.
